Mixtape: What Seattle Sounds Like

This is the first of a quarterly mixtape series where each author of this blog brings you fresh (and older favorite) jams from their respective hometowns.

EDIT: If you downloaded an earlier version of this mix you might have had trouble opening tracks 2 & 3. The download link has been fixed, but if you just need those two tracks here they are.

I won’t waste your time telling you that grunge is dead (because it’s not) or that folk musicians only comprise a small portion of musicians in the Pacific Northwest (because they might still be the majority). But what I will tell you is that if you dig a little deeper than what’s on the shelves of your friendly chain record store, there is a seething mass of raw talent waiting to be heard. Not all of the bands on this mix are new — or even still around, for that matter — but they were ahead of their time, in some ways. While Seattle has been a musical mecca and a part of the cultural zeitgeist for a good 25-30 years, I’d argue that the last ten years of musical proliferation in every genre imaginable (this city has raging hip hop and electronic scenes as well as the type of stuff I usually feature) is thanks to the repeal of the Teen Dance Ordinance in 2002. The largely inclusive, self-sustaining DIY culture that nearly every young artist in Seattle traces their roots to wouldn’t be possible without the “all-ages or die” stance taken by those who truly care about cultivating new and exciting things in Seattle, Olympia, Portland, Boise, and all the cities in between. Long live moshing kids. Long live black X’s drawn on hands with Sharpie. Long live not giving a fuck. Long live the PNW.

  1. Hey there exceptional website! Does running a blog similar to this take a large amount
of work? I have very little understanding of computer programming
however I had been hoping to start my own blog in the near future.
Anyhow, if you have any ideas or techniques for new blog owners please share.
I understand this is off subject nevertheless I simply had to ask.
    Appreciate it!
